Sisu is a Finnish word that describes a deep reserve of inner strength we all have the capacity for. It’s the kind of power that enables us to push past our perceived limits, rise above hardships, and endure what once seemed unimaginable.

I named my practice “Sisu Sister” to reflect the role I hope to play as a doula—offering a sisterly presence while empowering you to channel your inner sisu. This name is also an ode to my Finnish nana, who left behind a legacy of immense strength and pride in our heritage.

1 in 3 births are described as traumatic.

And when we say things like “all that matters is a healthy mom & healthy baby,” we can discount the very real ways birth trauma affects mothers and families.

This Birth Trauma Awareness Week, I’m thinking about how we can move beyond survival as the standard for a “healthy” birth.

As a doula whose practice is rooted in trauma-informed care, I believe we should work to prevent trauma whenever possible, recognize it when it occurs, and support those healing from its effects.

Because our goal shouldn’t just be survival. Our mothers deserve not only to survive, but to thrive ❤️‍🩹

Did you know most prenatal vitamins contain little to no choline? 🍳

We hear a lot about folate and iron during pregnancy (for good reason!), but choline is another nutrient that plays an important role, especially for fetal brain development.

I put together this simple guide to make it easier to spot choline-rich foods on your next grocery trip!

Whole food sources are a great place to start, but if you’re unsure whether you’re meeting your needs, consider talking with your healthcare provider about taking a choline supplement.

It’s c-section awareness month, let’s chat! 💭

Every once in a while, I’ll see someone say that cesarean sections are “the easy way out” or “not real births,” and I can’t help but roll my eyes. BIG TIME.

First of all, there’s no such thing as a “real” birth. Medicated or unmedicated, vaginal or cesarean, you gave birth. End of story. Your birth is not lesser than anyone else’s just because it looked different from theirs.

And “easy?!” There is nothing “easy” about having a major abdominal surgery that goes through 7 different layers of tissue (usually while you’re awake)… and then recovering while adapting to life with a newborn that completely relies on you.

It’s not just physical, either. Especially with unplanned or emergency c-sections, things can feel overwhelming or out of control, and sometimes mothers aren’t given the space to feel fully informed and involved in their care. This experience can really leave a mark.

C-sections are a necessary, lifesaving tool, and cesarean births can be positive, but no matter the circumstances, they should be treated as the serious procedure they are.

During pregnancy, every organ system in your body undergoes major shifts to help support your baby’s development. This post only highlights some of those changes.

As your body transitions into “pregnancy mode” and you move through these shifts, it is so important to practice self-compassion.

This doesn’t mean loving every change you experience…
It means showing yourself grace as your body stretches, adapts, and works hard to be your baby’s first home.

You are allowed to rest more.
You are allowed to ask for support.
You are allowed to be gentle with yourself.

I remember seeing this photo for the first time years ago and thinking… Why have I never seen art depicting Mary giving birth to Jesus before? What other birth story is so widely known and celebrated?

This image and the poem that follows frame Mary in a moment where the deeply human experience of labor meets the unique sacredness of the nativity.

Though I’m no longer religious, I still celebrate Christmas and look to Jesus as an example of radical love for humanity. He reached out to everyone, especially those misunderstood, marginalized, and pushed to the edges of society. His story inspires me to stand with others, to care fiercely, and to turn compassion into action.

No matter what we celebrate, where we’re from, what we believe, or who we love… We are all one: sharing a portal to life and so much more🤍

🖤 Research consistently shows that for low-risk pregnancies, midwifery-led care lowers maternal-infant mortality, minimizes interventions, and creates more positive experiences throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

🖤 Midwives combine evidence-based care with a relationship-centered approach rooted in centuries of maternal care traditions. They take the time to get to know each family, prioritize physiologic birth, and support informed choice in hospitals, birth centers, or at home.

December 7th is Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome Awareness Day! 🌼

✨TTTS is a rare but serious condition that affects identical multiples who share a placenta.

✨It occurs when blood vessels in the shared placenta connect unevenly, causing an imbalance in blood volume.

✨One twin struggles with too little blood and amniotic fluid (donor) while the other receives too much (recipient).

✨TTTS can develop suddenly and progress quickly—early detection and treatment saves lives.

✨ Thanks to medical advances like fetoscopic laser surgery, outcomes have dramatically improved in recent years, with the majority of twins now surviving after appropriate treatment.

There’s a reason that across the globe, warm broth-based meals have traditionally been offered to new mothers after birth. Bone broth is gentle, hydrating, and full of the nutrients your recovering postpartum body needs.✨🍲

You can definitely use store-bought broth, but homemade is naturally more nutrient-dense and easier to make than you might think. It also freezes well for months, making it perfect to prep ahead of baby’s arrival!

This batch came together in under 3 hours using a leftover rotisserie chicken in my instantpot:
1️⃣ Sauté or roast the bones until golden
2️⃣ Cover with water
3️⃣ Add chopped carrots, minced onion + garlic, peppercorns, soy sauce, and apple cider vinegar
4️⃣ Pressure cook on high for 2 hours
5️⃣ Allow the pressure to naturally release (this may take up to 45 minutes)

Strain a few times, and you’ll be left with a beautifully golden, deeply flavorful chicken broth that feels like a warm hug! 💛

Did you know that babies born vaginally develop different foundational gut flora than babies born via c-section? 🦠

👶 Babies born via c-section inherit gut microbes that are more like maternal skin than vaginal flora. Research suggests this may slightly raise the risk of certain immune conditions, like celiac disease and asthma.

❤️ Luckily, there are many ways to support your baby’s growing microbiome, no matter how they make their way earthside. Empower yourself with knowledge, not pressure to be perfect!

🤱 Breast milk is rich in beneficial microbes and associated with lower systemic inflammation as well as stronger immune function.

🧬 Prenatal probiotics have been linked to positive effects on the gut microbiota of newborns, especially those born via c-section or exposed to antibiotics.

🧫 Vaginal seeding is being explored for how it might enhance the microbiome in c-section babies, but until more research emerges, @acog_org & @ameracadpeds recommend against this practice.

💊 Many other factors, including gestational age, maternal health/diet, and antibiotic use, also influence the newborn microbiome.

✨ Birth is just one piece of the puzzle, and your baby’s microbiota is ever-evolving!

🩺 This is very important to me because having PCOS has played a huge role in shaping my passion for reproductive health advocacy.

👉 If you also have PCOS, how long did it take for you to be diagnosed? How many doctors did you see along the way? Research shows that 34% patients wait more than two years, and 47% see more than three doctors before receiving their diagnosis (PMID: 27906550).

🔬 PCOS affects millions, yet it remains vastly underresearched and widely misunderstood, which is unacceptable. Awareness alone is not enough. We need more research, better treatment options, and systemic change to ensure women’s health is truly taken seriously.

Studies have shown that eating 6–7 dates daily starting at 36–37 weeks is associated with increased cervical readiness, reduced risk of induction or augmentation, and shorter early and active labor (PMIDs: 21280989, 32290818).
